A rotary-screw compressor is a type of gas compressor, such as an atmosphere compressor, that runs on the rotary-type positive-displacement system. They are commonly used to replace piston compressors where large volumes of high-pressure air flow are required, either for large industrial applications or even to operate high-power atmosphere tools such as jackhammers and impact wrenches. For smaller sized rotor sizes the inherent leakage in the rotors becomes much more significant, becoming less useful than piston types for smaller sized volume air compressors.
